Columbus, OH –A freight train derailed and caused an explosion about 2:00 a.m. this morning just southeast of the Ohio State University campus. A mile-wide area had to be evacuated due to the fire that resulted from the explosion. About 100 homes had to be evacuated. The evacuees were being taken to Rhodes Center at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. The train was carrying denatured alcohol and styrene, a chemical used to make plastic. About 16 of the 98 cars on the Norfolk Southern Corp. tracks derailed. At least two people were injured as they were walking to investigate the accident. Firefighters will let the fire burn itself out and hopefully residents can return to their homes by the end of today. It was fortunate that the accident occurred in the middle of the night, so few people were hurt. An investigation into the cause of the derailment is in progress. If you have a loved one who has been injured in a train accident, contact a Columbus personal injury attorney to review your case.
